Forging hammer: hydraulic or pneumatic

A hammer shapes heated stock by impact. This section has two different classes. The TRtech CHU are hydraulic hammers for closed-die hot forging: 12 models with blow energies from 16 kJ on the CHU-160 to 200 kJ on the CHU-2000, rams from 1250 to 13,500 kg and 63–95 blows per minute. They go into forging shops for batches of forgings in a closed die.

For hand forging in a workshop there is the NARGESA PH50: a pneumatic hammer with a 50 kg falling weight, 240 blows per minute, a 180 mm ram stroke, stock up to Ø70 mm or 60×60 mm square. The compressor is built in, so no separate air supply is needed.

A CHU hammer is selected together with the die and the foundation: the blow energy decides which forging it will fill, and the hammer’s weight — 32.5 to 326 t — decides the foundation. Gas forges heat the stock, and the general selection criteria are on the forging equipment.

Questions and answers

How is the CHU blow energy selected?

From the forging and the die: the forging’s weight and area, the material and the temperature. The CHU range runs from 16 to 200 kJ; we calculate the specific model for your die together with the foundation.
