How to choose a metal drilling machine

A drilling machine drills, enlarges, countersinks and reams holes, and many models also tap threads. The LUNA catalog carries German MAXION and Weiler machines and a radial drill under our own LUNA brand: from the high-speed MAXION SPEEDMAX bench drill for holes up to Ø4 mm at 24,000 rpm to the Weiler VO100 and VO104 radial drills for Ø100 mm with reach up to 4000 mm.

Seven types in the catalog

TypeWhen to chooseIn the catalog
Bench drilling machinessmall holes in small parts; the machine sits on a workbenchMAXION, Ø4–Ø20 mm
Column drilling machinesthe shop workhorse: larger holes, throat depth and spindle stroke, power feed on some modelsMAXION, Ø18–Ø50 mm, threads up to M45
Radial drilling machineslarge, heavy parts: the head moves over the part, the part stays putWeiler and LUNA Octans, Ø50–Ø100 mm, throat depth up to 4000 mm
Tapping machinesbatches of threads: feed matched to the pitch and spindle reverseMAXION, M1–M30
Drilling-milling machinesdrilling plus light milling on a cross tableMAXION BT F and FST, Ø30–Ø35 mm
Multi-station drilling machinesa batch part goes through several operations on one tableMAXION BRK, 3–6 heads
Broaching machineskeyways and internal profiles in hubs, in pre-made holesNARGESA BM25, 10 t, slots up to 25 mm

What to compare

Common mistakes

If you also need to mill slots and shoulders, look at drilling-milling machines with a cross table. When milling is the main job, you need a milling machine.

Questions and answers

Column or bench drilling machine?

A bench drill is for holes up to Ø20 mm in small parts. A column drill stands on the floor, has more throat depth and spindle stroke, drills Ø18–Ø50 mm and often has power feed and tapping. For holes over 20 mm or heavy parts, choose a column drill.

When do I need a radial drilling machine?

When the part is large or heavy. The head travels along the arm, the arm swings around the column, and the spindle reaches any point on the part without moving it. The catalog has the Weiler VO75, VO100, VO104, the mobile VOM50 and the LUNA Octans 50×12/1 for Ø50–Ø100 mm.

Can a drilling machine tap threads?

Yes, many MAXION column drills tap threads — the size, from M12 to M45, is in the specs. For batches there are tapping machines with a lead screw, up to 800–1000 threads per hour.

What does Morse taper MT mean?

It is the standard taper in the spindle that takes a taper-shank drill or a chuck. The number, from MT2 to MT6, is the size: MT2 on small machines, MT6 on the Weiler radial drills for Ø100 mm.

How much does a drilling machine cost?

The price depends on the model, configuration and tooling, and on delivery terms, so it is not listed on the site. Send a request and we will prepare a quotation including delivery, commissioning and training.

What should I send for a selection?

A drawing or your largest hole diameter, the material and grade, the size and weight of the part, how far from the edge the holes lie, thread sizes and quantity per shift. From this we select the type and model.
