Machining center: the whole part in one program

A machining center changes tools itself from a magazine, so milling, drilling, boring and tapping on a part run in one program. The operator loads the workpiece and starts the cycle. These machines are chosen for batches of prismatic parts with many operations, where cycle time matters.

LUNA Perseus 850Q CNC, LUNA Perseus 1000Q CNC and LUNA Perseus 1100Q CNC have FANUC 0i-MF Plus CNC, a BT40 taper, 10,000 rpm, a 24-position magazine with a 2.5 s tool change and 48 m/min rapids on all axes. Tables are 1000×500, 1150×500 and 1300×610 mm, X travel 850, 1000 and 1100 mm, table load 600, 600 and 1000 kg. Through-spindle coolant is optional; chips are removed by a screw or chain conveyor.

LUNA Perseus 63H CNC is a horizontal machining center. A rotary table with a B axis and a pallet system are fitted to order: with them a part is machined from several sides in one setup, and the next workpiece is prepared on a pallet while machining runs. The 63H specification is agreed in the technical proposal.

For one-off parts and training, the FPS CNC milling machines with handwheel operation are simpler; for large housings, see horizontal boring machines. How to compare milling machines is covered on the milling machines.

Questions and answers

How do the 850Q, 1000Q and 1100Q differ?

Mainly in X travel — 850, 1000 and 1100 mm. The 1100Q also has a larger 1300×610 mm table, a 1000 kg table load, 11/15 kW and up to 95.5 N·m of torque.

What does through-spindle coolant give?

Coolant flows through the tool straight into the cutting zone. This helps when drilling deep holes: the edge is cooled and chips are flushed out of the hole. It is an option on the Perseus Q.
