Automatic band saw for batch cutting

An automatic feeds the bar to the set length, clamps, cuts and repeats the cycle until the batch is done. The operator loads the stock and selects a program. Besides capacity, what matters on an automatic is the shortest piece and the remnant — how much bar is left at the end when the machine can no longer feed it.

The catalog carries four MEP SHARK series. The SHARK 331-1 NC 5.0 spider and SHARK 332-1 NC 5.0 are CNC automatics for Ø330 and Ø300 mm, with up to 100 programs in the NC 5.0 control; they come from the previous range, and availability is confirmed on request. The SHARK DIRECT feed the workpiece and program batches: the 332 DIRECT mitres from –45° to +60° and cuts pieces from 6 mm.

The SHARK KONNECT swivel the frame to the programmed angle: the 332 RC KONNECT takes Ø310 mm and the 662 H KONNECT Ø450 / 660×450 mm, both from –60° to +60°. The SHARK HS cut solid stock at a right angle only, but take the largest sections among the automatics, up to Ø660 mm on the 660 CNC HS 4.0, with blade speeds up to 200 m/min.

If batches are short and the operator is nearby anyway, a semi-automatic is enough. Batches of tube and light profiles are cut faster by automatic circular saws. How to compare capacity, angles and blades is explained on the metal-cutting saws.

Questions and answers

How does an automatic differ from a semi-automatic?

A semi-automatic completes one cut without the operator, but a person loads the workpiece for every cut. An automatic advances the bar to the set length itself and cuts a whole batch to a program.

What are the shortest piece and the remnant?

The shortest piece is the shortest part the automatic can cut from a bar: 6–10 mm on the SHARK DIRECT and 332 RC KONNECT, 10 mm on the SHARK HS. The remnant is the end of the bar the machine can no longer feed and cut: from 70 mm on the SHARK 660 CNC HS 4.0 to 400 mm on the SHARK 332 DIRECT. With expensive material the remnant noticeably affects the cost of a batch.

What is needed to select an automatic?

The material and grade, section, bar length, part lengths and quantity per shift, and the angles you need. From this we estimate cycle time and select the configuration.
