Circular saw for metal: for steel or for aluminium

A circular saw cuts with a rigid blade mounted on a shaft. The cut is fast and clean, so circular saws are used for batches of tube and profiles and for small-section bar. Their capacity is smaller than that of band saws: up to Ø175 mm in the catalog. For large round bar, beams and bundles, see the semi-automatic band saws and other metal-cutting saws.

For steel or for aluminium

The metal comes first. For steel MEP fits an HSS (high-speed steel) blade running at low speed: 30/60 rpm on the FALCON 352, 12 to 150 rpm on the TIGER depending on the model. For aluminium and light alloys it fits an HM carbide blade at high speed: up to 3400 rpm on the COBRA 352 MA, 1400/2800 rpm on the TIGER HR. So the saw is chosen for the metal you cut most often.

Manual, semi-automatic or automatic

On a manual saw the operator does the work: lowers the blade head and clamps the workpiece, with a pneumatic vice at the press of a button on the MA versions. The SX EVO semi-automatics clamp, cut and return the head on their own after the start. The NC 5.0, CNC and VELOCEX automatics also feed the bar to the set length and cut a programmed batch; on the RC versions the head swivels to the angle by itself.

What else to compare

Send the material, profile, angles and number of cuts per shift — we will select the saw and blade and quote delivery and commissioning. For large sections cut to a program of lengths, see the automatic band saws.

Questions and answers

How does a circular saw differ from a band saw?

A circular saw cuts faster and cleaner with a rigid blade, but its capacity is smaller, up to Ø175 mm in the catalog. A band saw takes large round bar, beams and bundles up to Ø1020 mm. Batches of tube and light profiles are usually cut on a circular saw, heavy stock on a band saw.

Can a steel saw cut aluminium?

Better not. Steel saws run an HSS blade at low speed, up to 150 rpm, while aluminium saws run an HM carbide blade at 1400–3400 rpm. For aluminium profiles choose a COBRA or TIGER HR, for steel a FALCON or TIGER.

What are HSS and HM?

HSS is a high-speed steel blade used to cut steel tube, profiles and bar at low speed. HM is a carbide blade for aluminium and light alloys at high speed. The blade type and size are listed on each model’s page.

How much does a circular saw for metal cost?

The price depends on the model, version, blades and equipment, as well as delivery terms, so it is not listed on the site. Send a request and we will prepare a quotation with delivery, commissioning and training.
