Semi-automatic band saw: cutting without the operator

After the start a semi-automatic makes the cut on its own: it lowers the blade frame, cuts and raises the frame again. The operator loads and positions the workpiece and starts the cycle, and prepares the next part while the cut runs. This is how identical parts are cut from tube, profiles and beams when no program of lengths is needed or there is no room to feed a bar.

The catalog carries two MEP series. SHARK SXI EVO is eight models for tubes, profiles and beams: from the SHARK 281 SXI EVO for Ø250 / 280×200 mm to the SHARK 652 SXI H 5.0 for Ø450 mm and a 650×450 mm open section. Models from the 282 up mitre both ways, the 452, 512 and 652 from –60° to +60°, and on the 652 SXI H 5.0 AUTO the frame swivels to the angle automatically.

The twin-column MEP THOR are for large sections and bundles: the frame travels on two columns, round bar from Ø450 to Ø1020 mm, square up to 1020×1020 mm, bundles up to 1020×620 mm. Blades up to 11000×67×1.6 mm, 20–100 m/min, 7.5–15 kW drive.

For occasional cuts a manual machine is simpler. For batches from bar stock without the operator, see the SHARK automatics with bar feeding. General selection criteria are on the metal-cutting saws.

Questions and answers

How does the SHARK SXI EVO differ from the THOR?

The SXI EVO cut at an angle, with the frame swivelling up to ±60°, and take tube, profiles or beams up to Ø450 mm. The THOR are twin-column machines for massive round bar, square stock and bundles up to Ø1020 mm; their data lists no mitre cutting, so for the THOR we confirm it in the quotation.

What is the open section on the SXI 452, 512 and 652?

For these models the W × H size in the catalog is given for an open section such as a beam or channel, while on the 281–382 it is for a rectangular section. For closed tube we check the largest section separately, together with the mitre angle.

Does a semi-automatic cut a programmed batch?

No. The operator loads and positions the workpiece for every cut. Batches from bar stock to programmed lengths are cut by automatic machines with bar feeding.
