Manual band saw: when it is enough

On a manual band saw the operator lowers the blade frame and clamps the workpiece by hand. It is the simplest layout, with no automation or programs. It suits maintenance shops, installation crews and stock-preparation areas that cut varied stock in small batches.

The catalog carries two MEP series. The compact PH series covers Ø180–Ø225 mm, 190–265 kg, with 2130–2450 mm blades. The SHARK 281 and 282 take Ø250 mm, weigh 370–440 kg and run a 2950 mm blade. The PH 262/HB and SHARK 282 mitre both ways, from –45° to +60°.

SHARK also comes in CCS versions: the system controls the frame feed, so a single cut runs without the operator at the handle, while the workpiece is still loaded and clamped by hand. That is why MEP and the LUNA catalog class CCS machines as manual saws. The SHARK 281 CCS/MA and SHARK 282 CCS/MA have the capacity of the manual SHARK 281 and 282, with a pneumatic vice in the MA version. The SHARK 332-1 CCS takes more, Ø300 / 330×250 mm, and mitres from –45° to +60°.

If you cut many identical parts and want to free the operator, see the SHARK SXI EVO semi-automatics. For programmed batches from bar stock, see the automatics, and for fast cutting of tube and light profiles, the circular saws. How to compare saws is explained on the metal-cutting saws.

Questions and answers

How does the PH series differ from SHARK?

The PH machines are more compact and lighter: Ø180–Ø225 mm, 190–265 kg, 2130–2450 mm blades. The SHARK machines take larger sections, Ø250–Ø300 mm, and are heavier, 370–640 kg, with 2950–3650 mm blades.

What do CCS and MA in the name mean?

CCS is a system that controls the frame feed, so a single cut runs without the operator at the handle. MA is a pneumatic vice that clamps the workpiece at the press of a button. Neither option turns the saw into a semi-automatic: the operator loads the workpiece for every cut.

What does a –45°…+60° range mean?

The frame swivels both ways: up to 45° to one side and up to 60° to the other. Both ends of a frame member can then be cut without turning the workpiece over.
