Laser tube cutters: diameter, length, chucks

A tube cutter machines round, square and rectangular tube and profile: holes, slots, shaped ends and weld joints — in one setup and without marking out. The numbers in the ORION model names are length and diameter: the LUNA ORION T2 6035 takes tube up to 6 m and Ø350 mm, the LUNA ORION T4 12055 up to 12 m and Ø550 mm. All of them have a 1.5–20 kW Raycus, Maxphotonics or IPG source.

The letters show the configuration. T ECO is the economy version for standard cutting. T2 is the two-chuck layout, T2S the two-chuck version with a side layout, T2L the one with automatic loading. T3 and T3L are three-chuck machines, where the third chuck supports a long workpiece more precisely. T4 machines have four chucks, for heavy and demanding work.

The Italian BLM GROUP machines are a class of their own: the BLM GROUP LT5.10 and LTX cut in 2D, the LT6, LT7 and LT8.20 in 3D — that is, at an angle to the tube axis — while the LT12, LT14 and LT24 take heavy tube up to Ø610 mm. The BLM entries are compiled from the maker’s public data; loading length, power and automation are confirmed for each project.

If there is little tube work and sheet is the main job, look at the combined machines or the sheet lasers. Five-axis 3D cutting of profiles is in the special systems section. How to compare power and configuration is covered on the laser machines.

Questions and answers

How many chucks do I need?

Two chucks are the standard for tube up to 6 m. Three chucks add support in the middle, so a long or thin-walled workpiece sags less. Four are taken for heavy large-diameter tube and demanding parts. The exact configuration is selected for your range of sections and tube weight.

What does automatic loading give?

The T2L and T3L versions feed tube from a magazine themselves, so the operator does not reposition every workpiece by hand. That pays off in batch work and with heavy tube; for one-off parts there is almost no gain.

How does 3D cutting differ from 2D?

In 2D the beam stays perpendicular to the tube surface. In 3D the head tilts and cuts at an angle, which is how weld preparations and complex joints for trusses and frames are made. Among the BLM machines the LT6, LT7, LT8.20, LT12, LT14 and LT24 work in 3D.
