CNC lathes: slant bed or flat bed

The slant-bed machines are the LUNA Altair 35 CNC, 35L, 50I and the 5 series (LUNA Altair 5-500Q CNC, 5-1000Q, 5-500S, 5-1000S). They are built for batches of bar and chuck work: a 360–500 mm maximum turning diameter, bar up to 50 or 65 mm, an 8″ or 10″ chuck, an 8-station servo turret and 20–30 m/min rapids. The CNC is a GSK 988TA on the Altair 35 and 50I and a FANUC 0i-TF Plus on the 5 series.

The flat-bed machines are Altair models with a 500, 630, 800 and 1000 mm swing, 770 to 2850 mm between centers and FANUC, Siemens or GSK CNC depending on configuration. The LUNA Altair 5085P CNC is the fastest of them: 30–2500 rpm, 11 kW and an 80 mm spindle bore; the 630–1000 mm models are for larger flanges, discs and shafts. The heavy series, the LUNA Altair 125-3000 CNC and its sister models, has a 1250 mm swing, 1250 to 10,850 mm between centers, 8000 N·m at the spindle, a Ø1000 mm four-jaw chuck and a Ø160 mm tailstock quill — for heavy shafts and axles.

Short, large-diameter parts are easier on a vertical lathe, and threads on pipe on pipe-threading lathes. For one-off parts without a programmer there are cycle-controlled lathes. How to compare lathes is covered on the lathes.

Questions and answers

Slant bed or flat bed?

A slant bed is more compact and faster: chips fall down into a bin or conveyor, and rapids reach 30 m/min. It is the choice for batches of bar parts up to 360–500 mm in diameter. A flat bed gives a larger diameter and length: up to 1000 mm swing and 2850 mm between centers, and 1250 and 10,850 mm on the heavy Altair 125 series.

Which CNC should I choose?

On the flat-bed models the control is chosen to order — FANUC, Siemens or GSK. The Altair 35, 35L and 50I come with a GSK 988TA, the 5 series with a FANUC 0i-TF Plus. The deciding factors are what your operators are used to, your existing programs and the post-processor in your CAM software.
