LUNA Altair is the widest range by size. The LUNA Altair 6140A and 6150A have a 400 and 500 mm swing over bed, a 52 mm spindle bore and 11–1600 rpm; the 6140B/A and 6150B/A versions have an 80 mm bore. Next come 630, 800 and 940 mm swings (Altair 6163, 6180, 6194 and their gap-bed 62xx versions) with a 104–140 mm spindle bore and up to 10,000 mm between centers. The heaviest, the LUNA Altair 61100–61160, have a 1000–1600 mm swing, 22 kW and 3.15–315 rpm — for large shafts, discs and flanges.

Weiler makes German precision lathes for toolrooms, repair and training, with accuracy to DIN 8605. The compact Primus and Praktikant have a 280–320 mm swing and up to 5000 rpm, the Condor VCPlus 360 mm, the Commodor 180 and 230 380 and 475 mm with a 56 mm spindle bore, and the DA 210 and DA 260 435 and 535 mm and up to 2000 mm between centers. The version sets the control: the Weiler Commodor 180 GSD has an 18-speed mechanical gearbox, VCD versions have stepless speed and a digital readout, and VCPlus versions add stepless feed. The Weiler C30 and C50 are servo-conventional: servo drives move the axes and the machine runs some operations as simple cycles.

The Seiger SLZ 300 K and SLZ 420 K are conventional lathes with a 300 and 430 mm swing, up to 2000 mm between centers and a 40/55 or 80/93 mm spindle bore (the larger one is an option). The Seiger SLZ 300 SK and SLZ 420 SK are servo-conventional versions with a Heidenhain 620 control.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between the LUNA Altair 6163 and 6263?

The 62xx models have a gap in the bed next to the chuck: a removable gap piece makes room for a short part of a larger diameter than the swing over bed allows. The other catalog figures are the same; the swing over the gap is confirmed in the technical proposal.

Which lathe replaces a 16K20 or 1K62?

The 16K20 and 1K62 have a 400 mm swing over bed, the same as the LUNA Altair 6140A and 6140B/A. If bar larger than 52 mm is fed through the spindle, take the 6140B/A with an 80 mm bore. What is a servo-conventional lathe?

A universal lathe whose axes are moved by servo drives instead of a mechanical feed gearbox. The operator uses electronic handwheels as on a conventional lathe, and sets feeds and thread pitches on the control. In this section these are the Weiler C30 and C50 and the Seiger SLZ 300 SK and SLZ 420 SK.
