LUNA CNC vertical lathes for discs, rings and flanges: the spindle is vertical and the part sits on a horizontal chuck.
In a vertical lathe the spindle stands vertically and the part lies on a horizontal chuck or faceplate. A heavy part rests on it under its own weight instead of overhanging as on a horizontal lathe, so it is easier to load by crane and to align. That is why these machines are used for discs, rings, flanges, wheels and hubs — parts whose diameter is larger than their length. Large machines of this type are traditionally called vertical boring mills.
LUNA Altair 6I CNC is a compact CNC vertical lathe: a 600 mm maximum turning diameter, 50–2000 rpm, a turret and FANUC, Siemens or GSK CNC depending on configuration. There is no tailstock, so it is not for long shafts.
Shafts and parts longer than their diameter are machined on CNC lathes with a horizontal spindle. For large diameters in one-off production there are Seiger SPL face lathes with a 1400–2300 mm swing in the cycle-controlled lathes section. How to compare lathes is covered on the lathes.
Look at the proportions and weight of the part. If the diameter is larger than the length and the part is heavy, choose a vertical lathe: the part lies on the chuck and does not load the spindle as an overhang. Shafts, axles and bushings longer than their diameter go on a horizontal lathe with a tailstock.
