Cycle-controlled lathes: between manual and CNC

On these machines the operator works by handwheel as on a universal lathe, while the standard features of the part — tapers, radii, grooves, threads and roughing passes — are set on the control as cycles that the machine runs itself. Cycles can be saved and repeated on the next part, so these lathes are chosen for complex one-off parts and small batches: no programmer or CAM is needed.

Weiler offers the E series: from the Weiler E30 with a 330 mm swing and 750 mm between centers to the E70HD and E80HD (720–800 mm, up to 6000 mm between centers, 37/30 kW) and the heavy E90–E200 (900–2000 mm, up to 16,000 mm, up to 65 kW). The Weiler V90 and V110 have a four-way bed, a 940 and 1160 mm swing and 3000–12,000 mm between centers.

Seiger offers the SLZ E series with Heidenhain MANUALplus 620 or Siemens: from the Seiger SLZ 300 E with a 300 mm swing to the SLZ 1200 E with 1250 mm and up to 20,000 mm between centers. The heavy SLZ 1200 S, SLZ 1500 and SLZ 2000 have a 1250–2000 mm swing, 70 kW and Siemens. The Seiger SPL 1400 CG and SPL 1400 LC are face lathes with a 1400–2300 mm swing for short, large-diameter parts.

For repair and simple parts a universal lathe is enough; for batches with a turret, see CNC lathes. How to compare lathes is covered on the lathes.

Questions and answers

Can these lathes be operated manually?

Yes. Cycle-controlled lathes have electronic handwheels: a simple operation is done by hand as on a universal lathe, and cycles are used where they save time.

How do cycles differ from CNC?

On a cycle-controlled lathe the operator builds the machining from ready-made cycles on the control in conversational mode, at the machine. On a CNC lathe the program is written in advance, often in CAM, and a turret changes the tools — faster on batches, but it needs a programmer.

What are Seiger SPL face lathes for?

For parts whose diameter is much larger than their length: large flanges, discs, rings and wheels. The part is clamped on a faceplate and there is no tailstock; the swing is 1400–2300 mm and the spindle bore 130–530 mm.
