LUNA Altair pipe-threading lathes for threads on pipe ends up to Ø340 mm: the pipe passes through the hollow spindle.
A pipe-threading lathe has a large hollow spindle: the pipe is passed through it and clamped, and the end projecting from the chuck is machined — the face is squared, the chamfer turned and the thread cut. The LUNA Altair 34100, 34150 and 34300 are designed for oil-country pipe from 4 1/2″ to 13 3/8″, that is 114–340 mm; the stated accuracy is IT7 and the surface finish Ra 1.6.
LUNA Altair 34100 CNC, 34150 and 34300 have CNC, a 355 mm spindle bore, 1000, 1500 and 3000 mm between centers and 18.5–30 kW. The LUNA Altair 34S CNC is more powerful: 30/37 kW, 90–400 rpm and a 300 or 365 mm spindle bore. The LUNA Altair 262A is manually controlled, with 18.5 kW, 5.6–254 rpm and 1000, 1500 or 3000 mm between centers — for repair work and small volumes.
For shafts and bushings that do not need a large spindle bore, see CNC lathes and universal lathes. How to compare lathes is covered on the lathes.

A CNC machine cuts the same thread on every pipe to a program and suits batches. The manual LUNA Altair 262A is easier to learn and suits repair work and individual pipes, but the thread quality depends on the turner.
The pipe diameter and wall thickness, the thread type and standard, the pipe length and the quantity per shift. From this we select the model, chucks and tooling.
