How to choose a gear hobbing machine

A hob generates the tooth continuously: tool and workpiece rotate in mesh, and the profile comes from enveloping rather than copying. So one hob cuts gears with any number of teeth of the same module — there is no need to change tooling for every gear.

The catalog holds two MHD lines. The FMZ series is vertical, for Ø200, 350 and 500 mm with module up to 4.5, 7 and 10 mm. The FMZ H series is horizontal, for Ø90/100, 180 and 300 mm; it runs higher hob speeds (up to 6000 rpm on the FMZ 90H) and up to 1200 mm of axial travel on the FMZ 300H, which makes it a machine for shafts rather than discs alone.

Three numbers are needed for selection: gear diameter, module and part length. Module matters more than diameter — it says whether the machine can handle the tooth; in the catalog that is up to 4.5 mm on the FMZ 200, 7 mm on the FMZ 350 and 10 mm on the FMZ 500. Axial travel decides whether the part is a shaft or a disc.

A hob works in soft metal, before hardening. If the gear is hardened, plan gear grinding from the start, because the profile is no longer the same after heat treatment. And a hob cannot take an internal rim at all: that calls for shaping. The full line-up is in the gear section.
