MHD SMZ gear shaping machines: 3 models, gears up to Ø500 mm, module up to 8 mm, 50–1000 strokes per minute.
A shaper cutter is a tool in the shape of a gear that strokes along the axis of the part while rolling in mesh with it. Its advantage is not speed but access: the tool needs no run-out beyond the rim, so it works where a hob would foul an adjacent surface.
Hence two typical cases: internal teeth, which a hob cannot cut at all, and a rim next to a shoulder or flange, where there is no room for hob run-out. The catalog holds three MHD SMZ machines: Ø160, 320 and 500 mm with module up to 4, 6 and 8 mm, shaper cutters up to Ø150 mm, stroke lengths of 50–180 mm and Sinumerik 840D sl controls.
The pace is set by strokes per minute: 50–1000 on the SMZ 16 and 50–800 on the SMZ 32 and SMZ 50. Stroke length — 50, 80 and 180 mm — limits the rim height that can be cut in one setup, so it is checked against the drawing before diameter is.
If the rim is external and access is clear, hobbing will be faster — shaping earns its place exactly where nothing else reaches. Like a hob, a shaper works before hardening; after it, grinding is needed. The full line-up is in the gear section.
