The KLINGELNBERG L 60 bevel gear lapping machine: gears up to Ø500/600 mm, shaft angle 90° or 79–101°.
A bevel set is finished as a pair rather than singly: pinion and gear are run together with lapping compound under a light torque. This develops the contact pattern — the area where the teeth actually touch under load. It governs both the noise of the drive and how it spreads the load.
KLINGELNBERG L 60 takes gears up to Ø500 mm as standard and Ø600 mm as an option, with a shaft angle of 90° or 79–101° and hypoid offset of ±70 mm. Lapping torque goes up to 30 N·m and pinion speed up to 3000 rpm. A lapped set is not split afterwards: it runs and is supplied as a matched pair.
Lapping does not correct geometry, it refines contact. If the profile has drifted out of tolerance after hardening, compound will not save it — that calls for grinding. So lapping belongs where gears are hardened moderately and the accuracy grade is not the highest.
The alternative to lapping is grinding bevel gears on the G-series machines, which gives a higher accuracy grade but needs different equipment. The sets themselves are cut on bevel gear machines and the result is checked on an inspection machine. The full line-up is in the gear section.
