Surface grinders: manual or hydraulic

A surface grinder flattens faces and holds parallelism where milling no longer gives the accuracy needed: plates, punches, dies, strips and guideways. The part is held on a magnetic chuck and the wheel removes hundredths of a millimetre per pass.

LUNA Atlas S comes in three levels. The LUNA Atlas S 618A and S 818A are bench-type manual machines with 460×180 and 480×200 mm tables, a 200×13 mm wheel and 1.1 kW; the 618A VT version reaches Ra 0.16 µm. The AHR models have a hydraulic table and an electric drive on the vertical axis: the LUNA Atlas S 2550 AHR, 3063, 30100, 4080 and 40100, with tables from 250×500 to 406×1020 mm. The AHD models are the same range but with a servo drive on the vertical axis, a PLC and an automatic cycle.

The Taiwanese Palmary PSG line has 20 models in three versions. The H and AH have a hydraulic table, and the operator handles the vertical feed by hand; the cross feed is manual on the H and automatic on the AH. Tables run from 450×150 mm on the PSG-1545H to 800×400 mm on the PSG-D4080AH, with a 180×13 mm wheel on the small tables and 355–405 mm on the large ones, 900–3250 kg. The AHR is for large plates and beds: tables from 1000×500 mm on the PSG-50100AHR to 2000×700 mm, a servo-driven vertical axis, a 405×50×127 mm wheel, a 7.46 kW drive (11.19 kW optional), 6–9 t.

If the cycle has to repeat by itself, look at NC surface grinders, including the Palmary PSG ACI and ACII, or CNC ones; for large plates and beds, at the gantry machines. How to compare grinding machines is covered on the grinding machines.

Questions and answers

How does AHR differ from AHD?

The table sizes and wheel are the same. On the AHR the vertical axis is moved by an electric drive, on the AHD by a servo drive with a PLC and an automatic cycle, so the machine runs the passes and reaches size by itself. The AHD is chosen when parts are identical and repeatability matters.

Why look at the magnetic chuck separately from the table?

The table is the mounting surface, but the part is held by the magnetic chuck, which is always smaller: on the Atlas S 3063 the table is 635×305 mm and the chuck 300×600 mm. It is the chuck size that limits your part.

How does the Palmary PSG H differ from the AH?

The table, wheel and weight are the same in each H/AH pair; both have a hydraulic table and a manual vertical feed. The difference is the cross feed: the operator handles it on the H, while it is automatic on the AH. The AH suits frequent grinding of wide plates, the H varied one-off parts.

What do CS, CL, DS and DL mean on the Palmary PSG 3060?

S and L stand for the wheel size and drive: 180×13×31.75 mm and 1.49 kW on the S, 355×38×127 mm and 3.73 kW on the L. The 600×300 mm table and the 1700 kg weight are the same on all four. The manufacturer does not disclose in the catalogue how the C version differs from the D; we confirm it in the quotation.
