CNC surface grinders: when you need a profile

CNC in surface grinding gives two things. First, repeatability: the whole cycle, with passes, spark-out and wheel dressing, is stored in a program. Second, profiles: when the axes interpolate, the wheel can produce not only a flat face but a contour — slots, steps and radii on punches and dies.

The NC3 range is the familiar sizes with full servo drive: the LUNA Atlas S 2550 NC3, 3063, 30100, 4080 and 40100, with tables from 200×460 to 406×1020 mm and X/Y/Z servos. Above them are heavier machines with brand-name controls: the LUNA Atlas S 7160×120 CNC with a 1600×600 mm table, Siemens 828D CNC and a 44/54 kW drive, the S 103D CNC with FANUC and the S 7370 CNC with an 800×1600 mm table.

Questions and answers

What is NC3 and how does it differ from NC2?

On the NC2 the longitudinal table stroke is hydraulic and the servos are on the vertical and cross axes. On the NC3 all three axes are servo-driven and interpolate, which is where profile grinding and a full program cycle come from.
