Three-roll plate rolls: the universal choice

In a three-roll machine two lower rolls drive the plate while the top roll presses from above: the lower it comes, the smaller the radius. The layout is simple, takes heavy thicknesses and handles varied parts — shells, arcs and cones. The edges are pre-bent as a separate operation: the plate is entered edge-first between the rolls, pre-bent, then turned around and the other end done the same way.

The catalog carries the Italian MG G-GE-GL series, 49 models. It starts with the MG G-GE-GL 1204 L: 1250 mm wide, plate up to 4 mm, pre-bending up to 2.5 mm, a 120 mm top roll and 3 kW. From there the range runs to heavy machines 3100 mm wide, for plate up to 195 mm, with a top roll up to 1100 mm and drives up to 380 kW — the class used for shipbuilding, tanks and large-diameter bodies.

If shells repeat and consistency matters, look at four-roll machines: they pre-bend both edges without re-setting the plate. For batches of thin-walled cylinders there are two-roll benders. How to compare plate rolls is covered on the plate rolls.

Questions and answers

Three-roll or four-roll?

Three-roll machines are simpler and cheaper to maintain, take the greatest thicknesses and suit varied parts. Four-roll machines win on batches: the plate is clamped between the central rolls, so it does not have to be aligned every time, and both edges are pre-bent in one setup.

Why is pre-bending thinner than the maximum plate?

When an edge is pre-bent, the force is concentrated on a short section of plate instead of being spread along the arc, so the load on the rolls is higher. That is why the specifications give two figures: the maximum rolling thickness and a lower pre-bending thickness.
